Air Conditioning FAQ’s

How often should I replace my filters?

Replace disposable filters at least once a month. If you have washable filters, they should be cleaned once a month. Dirty filters restrict air flow which negatively impacts system performance and efficiency.

Should I use electronic air cleaners and do they actually work?

Electronic air cleaners can actually play a big part in your complete home comfort. There are a number of whole-house filtration systems available. You can learn more by clicking on the Air Conditioning page.

Should I be using a programmable thermostat?

Programmable thermostats are more accurate and efficient than conventional thermostats. Additionally, they adjust the temperature settings automatically based on your unique schedule and needs.

Can I increase the efficiency and life of my air conditioning system?

The easiest and most critical thing you can do is clean and/or replace all filters once per month. In addition, try to avoid setting thermostats that caused your system to turn off and on frequently.

How often should I have maintenance done on my air conditioner?

Air conditioning systems should have maintenance performed on them twice a year. The main benefits are keeping your system running at maximum efficiency, minimizing repair costs, and detection of any issues before they become problems.

Should I close air vents and doors to rooms not used regularly?

Contrary to popular belief, closing air vents will decrease the systems’ airflow and efficiency. Closing air vents or doors disrupts the airflow and causes your air conditioning system to work harder and less efficiently.

How do I know if an air conditioning system is big enough or too big for my home?

Before purchasing a replacement system you should always make sure your system is sized properly. A load analysis on your home should be performed by an air conditioning expert to ensure your home has properly sized system. Many people believe the bigger the air conditioning unit the better. The fact is an oversized system can be very inefficient and raise your monthly utility bill.

How much does a new replacement system cost?

There are far too many variables to answer that question without an evaluation of your home and a proper onsite evaluation. Considerations include but not limited to size of home, floor plan, ceiling heights, existing ductwork, return air capacity, and your comfort preferences. An air conditioning expert should provide you a free estimate for a replacement system after visiting your home or business. You should question any quote provided over the phone.

What size system should I have?

There are far too many variables to answer that question without an evaluation of your home and a proper onsite evaluation. Considerations include but not limited to size of home, floor plan, ceiling heights, existing ductwork, and return air capacity. Proper sizing is very important to the efficiency and life of an HVAC system, and should be performed by a licensed air conditioning expert.

Is a system with more capacity better?

It depends on size of home, floor plan, ceiling heights, existing ductwork, and return air capacity. However, an air conditioning system with more capacity may turn on and off more frequently and run short cycles. An air conditioner with more capacity or too much capacity will then in turn actually be less efficient and more costly to operate.

What is a S.E.E.R. rating?

The S.E.E.R. (seasonal energy efficiency ratio) is the amount of cooling your system will deliver per dollar spent on electricity. As a rule, the higher the S.E.E.R. the more efficient the system will be saving money on monthly utility bills.

When I am trying to heat my home with my heat pump, why does it blow cold air?

When it is cold outside, a heat pump will accumulate frost on the outdoor coil and exposed lines. When the ice builds up, the heat pump unit will switch to a defrost mode to remove the frost. During a defrost cycle, the heat pump will blow cool air and sometimes make a strange noise. Once the unit has been defrosted, the heat pump will return to its normal heating mode.

Should I consider a humidifiers for my home?

The answer depends mostly on your desired personal comfort. As air is heated, it dries out and may cause sinus issues or static electricity or dry skin etc. Adding a humidifier will add moisture to the air and will help to minimize or eliminate these and other issues caused by dry air.
